West Sussex Highways & Transportation is a high profile County Council service with highway related issues accounting for a significant percentage of the Council’s customer enquiries. Managing our customers’ expectations is one of our most important aims and the role of the Highway Steward is critical in the delivery of our customer care.

The Highway Steward is a pivotal role in the successful maintenance of public highways, being responsible for carrying out routine and NRSWA inspections, recommending repair of the highway and responding to customer concerns about the condition of the highway in a given area.

The postholder will be based in Broadbridge Heath Depot, near Horsham and will be expected to travel independently around a specific area within the Horsham District.

We are looking for an experienced person to be based at the Area Highways Depot in Broadbridge Heath near Horsham, who will provide a quality highway network to all residents of West Sussex, through the regular inspection and repair of the highway and enforcement of highway legislation.

The role will be responsible for planning and carrying out routine and NRSWA inspections, recommending repair of the highway and the delivery of a professional customer focused service responding to customer concerns about the condition of the highway in a given area. Light manual work is an integral aspect to this role, for example, clearing of gully tops and cutting back minor vegetation encroachment.

You will have a proven track record in highway maintenance and customer service with an aptitude for dealing with the public and elected Members of the council in a formal but polite manner. You will have the ability to accurately record data on hand-held computers and exhibit a high level self-motivation and positive behaviours.
