The Head of Research is a key post reporting to the Director of Enterprise Services.


The Head of Research will lead in developing and implementing the University''s Research policy along with responsibility for ensuring a dynamic and flourishing research environment that will deliver the University''s strategic goals for research. The post holder will also advise the Vice-Chancellor''s Group concerning opportunities and challenges related to research, investment, impact, the Research Excellence Framework (REF), sectoral trends, emerging opportunities and risks.


The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, developing and enhancing the research infrastructure, facilitating the growth of both research income and research outputs as well as the quality and impact of research in line with the University''s research policies. Working closely with the Director of Academic Quality and Standards you will have responsibility for oversight and support of research degree programmes, ensuring that the University operates within the appropriate quality and regulatory frameworks.


Applicants must have research doctorate along with extensive relevant experience, you must be able to demonstrate excellent knowledge of the University Research Funding environment and have a research profile that will command respect within the research community. An experienced and capable manager, you will have the personal qualities needed to lead and develop a team.


Excellent verbal and written skills are essential as you must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with a wide variety of audiences internally and externally. Experience of working with a research intensive area of the public or private sector is essential, as is previous experience of designing and implementing strategies for increasing research innovation activity.
